No game files are downloaded or shipped with Modlo Creator: everything game-side is read from your own installation.

On Windows, Modlo Creator is a single .exe: there is no installer. Put it in any folder you like (for example C:\Tools\Modlo Creator\) and double-click it. On Linux it is an AppImage: see Linux for how to start it, then follow the same steps.

  1. Activate your licence. A small activation window opens before the editor. Paste the licence key from your Polar receipt email and press Activate (or Enter). The editor opens once the key is accepted. Later starts go straight to the editor.

  2. Set up GTA V. The Set up GTA V window looks for your game install. If it is listed under Found on this computer, press Use this. Otherwise press Browse for GTA5.exe… or type the folder that holds GTA5.exe.

The editor then generates the game’s archive keys from GTA5.exe (a few seconds). When it says Ready, close the window. If it asks you to, restart Modlo Creator once.

  3. Start a project. The Welcome window offers New project, Open… and your recent projects. Choose New project, give it a name and a folder. See Projects and saving for what is inside it.

The first time you open the Textures panel it offers to scan the game’s texture dictionaries once. It takes about 6 minutes, runs in the background and is cached, and afterwards every one of the game’s texture names can be searched. You can keep working while it runs.

Modlo Creator also runs on Linux, as an AppImage: one file that holds the editor and the libraries it needs. Linux support is in beta: it is built and tested, but has had less use on real desktops than the Windows version, so please report anything that does not work (see Where do I get help?).

What it needs: 64-bit Linux with glibc 2.35 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and newer, Fedora, Arch and most other current distributions) and a GPU with OpenGL 3.3.

  1. Make the file executable. In a terminal: chmod +x modlo-creator-*.AppImage, or allow running it as a program in your file manager’s properties for the file.

  2. Start it. Double-click it, or run it from a terminal: ./modlo-creator-<version>-x86_64.AppImage.

An AppImage needs FUSE (a fusermount or fusermount3 program, from your distribution’s fuse3 or fuse2 package). Without FUSE, start it with --appimage-extract-and-run.

  3. Set up GTA V. The Set up GTA V window finds the game installed through Steam (Proton, Flatpak, Snap and other library folders), Lutris, Heroic, Bottles or a Wine prefix. If it is not listed, type the folder that holds GTA5.exe.

Good to know on Linux:

  • Settings and caches live in ~/.local/share/interior-editor ($XDG_DATA_HOME/interior-editor when that is set).
  • File dialogs use zenity, or kdialog on KDE. With neither installed a message says what to install, and the GTA V setup takes a typed path.
  • The custom title bar is off by default on Linux, so the window has your desktop’s own frame. Preferences > Interface > Custom title bar turns it on (at the next start).
  • A key works on one computer at a time (unless your licence says otherwise).
  • Help > Licence… shows the status and who the key is licensed to, and has Deactivate on this computer.
  • To move to a new PC, deactivate on the old one first (or remove it in your customer portal), then activate on the new one.
  • After a successful check it keeps working offline for 14 days.

The full details are on the Licence keys page.

When it starts, Modlo Creator checks in the background whether a newer version exists. Nothing about you, your key or your computer is sent. If there is one, an Update available window lists what changed, with Download, Remind me later and Skip this version. Help > Check for updates… asks on demand, and Preferences > Interface > Check for updates at start turns the check off.
