Licence keys and updates

The first start opens a small activation window before the editor: enter the licence key from your Polar receipt email and press Activate (or Enter). The editor opens once the key is accepted; Quit closes it. Later starts go straight to the editor while the key is confirmed.

Help > Licence… shows the status and who the key is licensed to (the e-mail address is masked, jo***@example.com), has Deactivate on this computer and a button that opens your customer portal at polar.sh/modlocreator/portal (your key, your receipts and the computers the key is active on).

The editor confirms the key again every few hours in the background, and Save and Export check it before they write. If the key stops being valid (a refunded order, or this computer deactivated elsewhere), your work is autosaved first and the Licence window offers only Activate and Quit. Being offline never stops you within the 14 days below.

Command-line runs (--script, --screenshot, --export, --thumb) need an activated key on that computer; without one they print why and stop.

A key works on a set number of computers (one, unless your licence says otherwise). Activate uses one for this computer; later starts only check it.

To move to another computer:

  1. Press Deactivate on this computer on the old one, or remove that computer in your customer portal.
  2. Activate the key on the new one.

If you can’t get to the old computer any more, clear its activation in the portal: go to polar.sh/modlocreator/portal, sign in with the email you bought the licence with, and under Licence Key press the X button. Then activate the key on the new computer. The key field in the app says the same.

A computer whose activation was removed says so at its next check and waits for Activate: it never takes the activation back by itself. Reinstalling Windows or moving to a new disk without deactivating leaves the old activation in place: remove it in the customer portal.

Deactivating needs an internet connection. Offline, the activation stays: deactivate again later while online, or remove it in the customer portal.

A confirmed key keeps the tool working offline for 14 days; after that the editor has to verify the key again online.

The key of a refunded order is revoked and stops working at the next check. A key of another product is refused.

When the editor starts it reads one small public file that names the newest version, in the background: start-up never waits for it and being offline shows nothing. Nothing about you, your key or your computer is sent, only a plain request for the file.

When a newer version exists, an Update available window lists what changed since your version (after the Welcome window is closed):

  • Download opens the download page in your browser;
  • Remind me later asks again at the next start;
  • Skip this version stays quiet until a newer one is published.

Help > Check for updates… asks on demand, ignores a skipped version and says when you already have the latest. Preferences > Interface > Check for updates at start turns the start-up check off. The version you run is in Help > About Modlo Creator.
